Montco seeks air base runway
The commissioners want to ensure that the future of the runway is  
reviewed as thoroughly as possible, but they do not want to run an  
airport.

The Montgomery County commissioners Wednesday unanimously voted to  
apply to acquire the 8,000-foot-long runway at the Willow Grove Naval  
Air Station and the 450 to 500 acres of adjacent land that may be  
needed to support an airport use of the property.

But the commissioners repeated that the county has no intention of  
operating or managing an airport.

"We just want the future of the runway reviewed as thoroughly as  
possible," said Commissioner Chairman James R. Matthews.
However, neither Matthews nor Commissioner Joseph M. Hoeffel III  
ruled out the possibility of the county acquiring the runway and land  
and "mothballing" it until it is needed for future transportation or  
economic development purposes.
