Spain and U.S. Near Accord on Atomic Cleanup By RAPHAEL MINDER New York Times April 5, 2011PALOMARES, SPAIN - Forty-five years after narrowly avoiding nuclear obliteration in a U.S. Air Force accident, the villagers of Palomares, in southern Spain, have grown hopeful that the governments in Washington and Madrid will finally rid their land of contamination. Their recent optimism has been fueled by Foreign Minister Trinidad Jiménez, who told the Spanish Senate in February, in what probably amounted to the clearest commitment by the Spanish government to date, that clearing Palomares was "a priority." Days later, Washington sent a team of experts to Palomares to help evaluate how to clean Western Europe’s most radioactive site. After that American visit, Glenn S. Podonsky, the chief health, safety and security officer in the U.S. Department of Energy, said, "The two governments are exploring the best options in dealing with the issue of the contaminated soil." ...
