State To Inspect Former National Guard Firing Range By Sharon Turano Jamestown Post-Journal (NY) April 19, 2011FREWSBURG - A former National Guard rifle range off of Route 62 will be inspected this summer for potential hazards. The National Guard Bureau reports the range is one of 23 former New York Army National Guard training sites in the state that will be inspected for potential hazards due to once being a rifle range. Eric Durr, director of public affairs for the state Division of Military and Naval Affairs, said such inspections occur throughout the world in order to make sure there has been nothing left at the site to cause concern. For instance, he said, there could be old bullets. Making sure the site has been properly taken care of is the military's way of being "a responsible neighbor," he said, adding the Department of Defense Military Munitions Response Program inspection mandates the inspections to address "human health, safety and environmental concerns" at former non-operational defense sites including more than 400 of them in 48 states and two territories formerly used by the National Guard. ...
