A $2.5 million summer survey project will give officials a picture of the shrapnel, shell casings and possibly unexploded military ammunition strewn through the desert between Grand Junction and Delta. The area is known as The Delta Range

"The Colorado Army National Guard (ANG) is performing the investigation to determine the potential for recovering additional military munitions," states an advisory prepared by the ANG.

Reports of unexploded ordinance (UXO) found at the site date from 1977. Various rockets, projectiles, mortars and grenades, some in unexploded condition, have been found by Army National Guard and Army Reserve personnel, by the BLM, and by private citizens. A total of 38 munitions items have been recovered and cataloged between 1977 and 2003.
