Denying dust study findings could be dangerous

In 10 years of war, hundreds of thousands of troops have developed neurological, respiratory and cardiovascular ailments, and the rates of such ailments have spiked alarmingly - a 251 percent rise in nervous system disorders alone.

Isolating the underlying causes has proved elusive, but one military scientist believes his studies have finally found an answer: microscopic dust particles laden with poisonous metals, bacteria and fungi.

Navy Capt. Mark Lyles, chairman of medical sciences and biotechnology at the Center for Naval Warfare Studies, is so confident of his findings that he describes the contaminated soil as "the smoking gun."
