EPA considers cleanup permit for Radford arsenal

Agency officials say most of the known contamination at the Radford arsenal is gone or harmless.

An acid wastewater lagoon. A red water ash burial ground. A TNT wastewater treatment unit. An asbestos disposal trench.

Those are just a few of the areas at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant identified in a recent government report.

Despite their ominous-sounding names, many of the former dumping grounds for hazardous waste no longer pose a threat to human health or the environment, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
