Navy to test East Lyme pond for mercury levels Selectman says town has been seeking update for years By Stephen Chupaska The Day (CT) June 21, 2011East Lyme - Throughout the remainder of the year, the Navy will conduct tests to determine levels of mercury in Dodge Pond, where an underwater acoustic testing facility has operated for 65 years and where there has been a 16-year ban on eating fish caught in the pond. First Selectman Paul Formica said Monday the town has been asking for an update on the status of the pond for three years. According to Mark Hammond, the program manager at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, the Navy will be collecting water and fish samples to be analyzed for mercury. ...
