Army will check former firing ranges NEAL P. GOSWAMI Bennington Banner (VT) July 15, 2011BENNINGTON -- A former World War II-era Army firing range in Bennington is among 15 former ranges and live-fire munitions sites around the state that the Army will look over this fall to ensure no dangerous ordinance remains. The now-closed Vermont Army National Guard sites are being inspected and evaluated as part of the Military Munitions Response Program, according to officials. Similar actions are taking place all over the country under the same program run by the National Guard Bureau. Vermont National Guard Facilities Manager John Patry said the program is "a review by the feds that is looking at all of the sites that they can document were ever used as firing ranges." He said the program is intended to ensure that all sites are clean and safe. "They're looking for old ones that were closed, and they're looking to see that they were closed properly," Patry said. ...
