Authority says no to runway

The runway is dead.

Whatever moves into the nearly 900 acres at the Willow Grove Naval  
Air Station won’t be arriving from the skies. On Wednesday, the  
Horsham Land Reuse Authority shot down both applications to keep the  
nearly 8,000-foot runway open for a general aviation airfield.

The two separate votes were met with a large roar of approval from a  
capacity crowd that spilled out of the doors of the Horsham Township  
Community Center.
The meeting was held to allow the authority’s land planning  
consultants, RKG Associates, a chance to publicly evaluate and  
explain the 17 applications for free or reduced land filed as “public  
benefit conveyances.” More importantly, it was the first opportunity  
for the authority to vote on land plans.

The applications are part of the federal process that allows public  
entities including municipalities, school districts, homeless  
providers and others the opportunity to obtain surplus military  
property for free or reduced prices.
