Protecting Navy’s work at Webster Field Southern Maryland Newspapers August 10, 2011Nearly 35 years ago St. Mary's County adopted special zoning rules around Patuxent River Naval Air Station. They have been altered in the years since, and because they limit what can be built under the flight paths of the Navy base they have at times been controversial. But those zoning rules have also been crucial, Navy and community leaders say, in protecting the mission at Pax River, and thus in protecting the economic vitality of the Lexington Park area, and indeed the entire county. Now St. Mary's County government is talking about establishing special zoning it's called an AICUZ, for Air Installation Compatible Use Zone around Webster Field in St. Inigoes as well. County officials have talked about it before, since 1978 in fact, but have never followed through. There has been no pressing need. The Navy's Webster Field facility is in a rural area, where there has been little large-scale development, and where little has been proposed. ...
