Residents near Kirtland believe tap water is contaminated By Stuart Dyson KOB TV-4 News (Albuquerque, NM) August 11, 2011Some people in Albuquerque's Southeast Heights have quit drinking tapwater, fearing contamination from the huge jet fuel spill at Kirtland Air Force Base - contamination the local water authority says does not exist, at least not yet. Eight million gallons of jet fuel leaked from underground pipes years ago, seeping into the groundwater, creeping slowly toward city drinking water wells. Scientists say it's at least 14 years away from contaminating the wells, but many of the people who live in its path won't drink the water anyway. Don't tell Araceli Jimenez there's nothing wrong with the water. She thinks it smells like chemicals and bleach and she won't drink it. Instead she's on the bottled stuff. ...
