Study at former MCLB sites finds no contamination Karen Jonas Desert Dispatch (CA) September 26, 2011BARSTOW - A recently completed soil sampling study that looked at the potential health impact of old ammunition at two old firing ranges near the current Barstow Marine Corps Logistics Base found that the sites shouldn't have significant health risks for people, animals, or plants. The study completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in May looked at two firing ranges used by Marines in the 1950s through the 1970s. The two ranges were used for small arms training, including rifle and pistols. The Army Corps of Engineers checked for potential harm from leftover explosives and heavy metal contamination from the old ammunition left at the sites. The Army Corps of Engineers performs the studies to see if there is contamination and if old sites used by the military need to be cleaned up. In the case of the Barstow MCLB, the agency ruled that no significant contamination was found and further action was not needed. ...
