High levels of perchlorate detected in well By George Brennan Cape Cod Times (MA) October 13, 2011CAMP EDWARDS — Perchlorate more than four times the safe drinking water level was detected in a monitoring well on the western boundary of the Massachusetts Military Reservation, a cleanup official said Wednesday night. Perchlorate was detected at 9 parts per billion, Ben Gregson, remediation manager for the Army Impact Area Groundwater Study Program, told a meeting of the MMR Cleanup Team. Perchlorate is a contaminant from explosives and fireworks that has an adverse affect on pregnant women and small children. The monitoring well is 3,600 feet from a proposed municipal well, Gregson said. The Bourne Water District is currently seeking permits for that well inside the boundary of the military reservation and has been informed of the discovery, he said. ...
