Park near airport closed because of contamination fears By Howard Altman Tampa Bay Online (FL) October 14, 2011The Pam Callahan Nature Preserve is home to bald eagles, wood storks, least terns and the occasional bobcat. The preserve trail, which begins on Memorial Drive, is frequented by people from nearby apartment complexes, who come for the nature and to walk their dogs through the buttonwoods, Florida privets and Christmas berry plants. But this 150-acre Hillsborough County park, named for the woman who fought to keep it from being developed, wasn't always this bucolic. Between 1940 and 1947, the land was part of a much larger weapons test range for Drew Field, now known as Tampa International Airport. ...
