'Siberia' cleared as threat to healthState says dump site at Watervliet Arsenal is clean enough after removal work By BRIAN NEARING Albany Times-Union (NY) November 2, 2011WATERVLIET -- A sprawling World War II-era dump at the Watervliet Arsenal has been cleaned enough to present no threat to public health or the environment, the state Department of Environmental Conservation said. DEC is proposing to remove the arsenal's "Siberia Area," a 15-acre fenced dump south of Watervliet Junior-Senior High School, from a state list of inactive hazardous waste sites, where it has been included since 1987. This change would come as the Army, which operates the 140-acre arsenal, has agreed to open 60 unused acres for private development. Removing the dump from the hazardous waste list would relieve the state of responsibility for continuing to monitor groundwater, and transfer that role to the Army under the federal Resource Recovery and Conservation Act. ...
