Knolls radioactive cleanup falls behind
December completion date scrapped due to storm-related delays

NISKAYUNA -- The troubled radioactive cleanup at Knolls Atomic Power  
Laboratory is behind schedule because of this fall's two tropical  
storms, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

DOE spokesman Bill Taylor said Thursday the cleanup will not be done  
by December as had been announced earlier this year. He was unable to  
immediately provide a revised schedule.

Taylor said tropical storms Irene and Lee delayed work at the site  
and "washed away" some soil, but no radioactive contamination spread.  
He could not immediately offer further details.

This spring, the private company behind the cleanup hired another  
firm to take over the stalled project, and DOE projected the work --  
initially set to be done by September -- would take until December.
