Deal reached for sale of 800 acres of Navy land in South Weymouth
LNR to buy land for $25M; Navy to clean contamination

WEYMOUTH - Officials are expected to sign a last-minute deal for the  
sale of 800 acres of unused Navy land in South Weymouth today,  
clearing a major hurdle for a massive development that supporters say  
could bring thousands of jobs to the region.

Officials from the Navy and LNR Property Corp., the master developer  
for the project, are expected to sign a $25 million purchase-and-sale  
agreement for the remaining portion of the former Navy air base at a  
meeting today, the deadline set by the two sides when they reached a  
tentative deal last August.

The property would transfer to LNR Property Dec. 15, allowing the  
developer to move ahead with plans for housing, stores, offices,  
parks and a golf course on 1,400 acres in Weymouth, Abington and  
Rockland.
