Navy explosives turn up on southern Maryland shore By Martin Weil Washington Post January 7, 2012Navy ammunition from the World War II era has been turning up near the Potomac River shore in southern Maryland, and authorities have closed a state park where the shells have been found. The Maryland State Fire Marshal's office said 10 more pieces of ordnance were found Saturday in an isolated area of Newtowne Neck State Park in St. Mary's County. The Maryland Park Service said the park, near Leonardtown, has been closed until further notice. A St. Mary's County spokesman said it was "believed the explosives are being unearthed by the tides in the river or washed ashore." ...
