[CPEO-MEF] NOISE: F-35 Training Basing

The Air Force proposes to establish a Pilot Training Center for the  
F-35A Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) aircraft at one or more existing Air  
Force or Air National Guard installations within the continental  
United States. The F-35A is a fifth-generation conventional take-off,  
multiple-role fighter with an emphasis on air-to-ground missions. The  
aircraft was designed to replace and supplement the F-16 and A-10  
aircraft as well as complement the F-22.

The basing alternatives for an F-35A Pilot Training Center include  
Boise Air Terminal Air Guard Station, Idaho; Holloman Air Force Base  
(AFB), New Mexico; Luke AFB, Arizona; and Tucson International  
Airport Air Guard Station, Arizona. On July 29, 2010 the Air Force  
announced its Preferred Alternative for the Pilot Training Center as  
72 F-35A training aircraft at Luke AFB, Arizona. However, no  
decisions regarding the proposal will be made until after the  
environmental impact analysis process is complete.

The Air Force released the Environmental Impact Statement on January  
20, 2012, to start a 45-day comment period. The proposal has received  
mixed responses from potential host communities. Here are links to
