EPA discusses contamination of Allied Industrial Park at meeting

Jacquelyn Murray has lived and worked around Allied Industrial Park for three decades. Thursday, she learned just how contaminated the area is.

"My kids and I played in those areas where the contamination is," Murray said.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, one soil sample, around the corner of a building from a ball field, showed concentrations of cancer-causing polychlorinated biphenyls, known as PCBs.

Murray used to consider herself fortunate when someone gave her a fish that had been caught in nearby Rocky Creek. Those fish also have PCBs, she learned in a meeting Thursday night, when the EPA discussed its proposal to put the 433-acre Allied Industrial Park onto its Superfund list of the country’s most contaminated properties, which is also known as the National Priorities List.

EPA wants to add Bibb industrial park site to Superfund list

BY S. HEATHER DUNCAN

March 7, 2012

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency expects to recommend adding Allied Industrial Park in Bibb County to the federal National Priorities List, commonly known as the “Superfund” list of the country’s most contaminated properties.

...

The Department of Defense manufactured ordnance on 433 acres between Guy Paine Road and Rocky Creek from 1941 to 1965. A private company continued to manufacture ordnance there until Allied Chemical Co. purchased the land and manufactured seat belts at the facility during the 1970s. The land was subsequently turned into an industrial park by the Macon-Bibb County Industrial Authority.

...

Wendel said the Allied site has long been known to qualify for the Superfund program. It wasn’t added before because the state of Georgia was trying to work out cleanup with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which is responsible for removing contamination from Formerly Used Defense Sites.
