Cleanup of former ordnance plant reveals casings

MARION -- An Army Corps of Engineers project that began with  
environmental investigation and cleanup of the former River Valley  
High and Middle School campus and expanded to include other sites may  
be a year away from completion.

Investigators for the Ohio Department of Health and Ohio  
Environmental Protection Agency began exploring concerns about the  
former Department of Defense site in 1997 after a school nurse put  
together a list showing 15 cancer cases among River Valley graduates.

The probe spread to the sites of the former Scioto Ordnance Plant,  
located north and east of the city of Marion, and Marion Engineer  
Depot, now the Marion Industrial Center.
