New project seeks ‘explosive’ information

The reason Sam McPhetres is interested in unexploded World War II   
ordnance is bone chilling.

It seems his friend was swimming off North Tinian where there exists  
a mixing of currents that causes a whirlpool known as the “garbage  
hole” because it sucks in all sorts of debris.

Sam’s buddy spotted a flash of something he thought might be booty  
from a ship that sank in 1634 and picked up the treasure and tucked  
it into his wetsuit.

Sam’s friend had a very unfortunate encounter with a phosphorous bomb.

The Division of Environmental Quality and AMPRO have teamed up on a  
second NMI project to inventory potential underwater UXO to create a  
map of submerged ordnance in the waters of Saipan, Tinian and Rota.
