Idaho Guard on the hunt for old bombs By KATHLEEN KRELLER Idaho Statesman April 25, 2012Contractors and staff at Boise’s Gowen Field are working to make sure the past doesn’t come back to haunt them. Using sound waves, digital maps and federal dollars, they are searching where bombs, grenades and ammunition were once stored. Two areas are of special interest: a large field along Gowen Road that until the 1970s served as a munitions storage area; and the grounds around an old Marine Corps barracks. The Idaho National Guard has Military Munitions Response Programs at military properties across the state, said Maj. Jim Hawkes, an environmental manager at the base. ...
