By CHRISTINIA CRIPPES The Hawkere (IA) May 18, 2012MIDDLETOWN - A memorial honoring the dead, and some still-fresh impressions from former workers, at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant were the only obvious reminders of the horrors that occurred and toxins that remain at the 19,000-acre site. Otherwise, the sun and 80-degree temperature Thursday afternoon made it a fine day for folks to fish on the property's Lake Mathes and for the members of the plant's public restoration advisory board to tour the grounds. "We've been working on this (cleanup effort) since 1990. It's now in its 22nd year. We've probably got another decade," said Restoration Advisory Board co-chairman Rodger Allison, adding even after the work is done, the public and the Army will continue to monitor to ensure the contamination is contained. ...
