PERCHLORATE: State officials back tentative cleanup deal BY JIM MILLER Riverside Press-Enterprise (CA) July 17, 2012SACRAMENTO - With some officials urging a tougher line, state water authorities voiced support Tuesday for a tentative settlement that would end the years-long legal fight over who should pay to clean up groundwater contamination in Rialto and Colton.
The majority of entities linked to the Cold War-era contamination have signed on to the cleanup settlement announced in May. Several, including Goodrich Corp., have not, and continue to negotiate with the federal government.
"Hopefully we're on the cusp of getting this done," Charles R. Hoppin, the chairman of the California Water Resources Control Board, said during a hearing Tuesday, July 17. Resuming state efforts to force a cleanup could upend the talks, restarting a legal fight that has been a "cash cow" for lawyers, he said.
