Wasn't there ANYBODY ever in Charge of the
Environmental Department or BMP (Best Maintenance Practices) of any part of the
Military? Ever? We see base after base after installation, etc
having these environmental waste hazards that cost millions/billions of taxpayer
funds (think Superfunds) to rectify and clean up. Is it ever going to
end? Is the Military ever going to hold anybody accountable (Sec. of
war?). Are they changing their ways? Bases over sea's? Geez,
will this taxpayer drain & gift to developers ever end? Isn't it about time
we hold "someone of authority" responsible? I understand in times of
war that you have to do things urgently and unconventionally different, but you
also have to be responsible and accountable for what you do and create, and try
to do what's right, even if you have to go back and "fix" things that
happened on your watch.

Cleanup Underway at Navy Runway Workshops

The 4.18-acre cleanup Site 34 in the Naval Air
Station's runway area next to the Oakland Estuary looks barren from a
distance. But up close, concrete slabs and pavement remind us of its bygone
days as a bustling workshop area.
This area was once part of the division known as the
Naval Air Rework Facility (NARF). Everything from sandblasting and painting,
to metal working, woodworking and scaffold maintenance went on out there. More
than 40 years of activity left soil around buildings contaminated with lead,
arsenic, pesticides, PCBs, and aircraft and diesel fuel. Above-ground fuel
storage tanks and electrical transformers contributed to the
contamination.
The Navy will clean up the soil in this area next
year. The draft work plan, which the Navy released July 31, was discussed
during a presentation at this month's Restoration Advisory Board (RAB)
meeting.
