Airborne sensor to help chart contamination in Mead area By Kevin Cole Omaha World-Herald (NE) September 29, 2012A low-flying helicopter, cruising in the vicinity of Mead, Neb., and dangling a piece of equipment that looks something like a rocket, is not as ominous as it sounds. Kristine Stein, a project manager with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, said that starting Monday a helicopter will be conducting an aerial geophysical study of the subsurface near the former Nebraska Ordnance Plant at Mead. The study is expected to take several days and will be used to help determine the movement of groundwater contaminated during the plant's operation. “We have been meeting with residents in the area to let them know what is going on so they aren't alarmed,” Stein said. “The equipment attached to the helicopter does look a little like military equipment.” ...
