Camp Bonneville cleanup resumes after 3-year hiatus because of higher-
than-expected contamination
Peter Beland Oregonian October 14, 2012A pair of deer bolt across a road from a thicket of trees and settle onto a patch of overgrown grass near a duck pond -- a spot that millions of bullets once zipped past on their way to cutout targets emblazoned with the red star of the Soviet Union. This rifle range and other parts of the Camp Bonneville Military Reservation, about 12 miles east of Vancouver and 6 miles north of Camas, are in the first of four phases of a recently resumed cleanup that will eventually lead to the creation of a regional park and wildlife area in a nearly 4,000-acre area ravaged by nearly 90 years of U.S. Army use. Staff from Clark County and the state Department of Ecology presented to the county Clean Water Commission earlier this month an update on the cleanup, which has been ongoing with starts and stops for nearly a decade. The presentation highlighted water contamination issues, what the next two years will look like, and forest stewardship initiatives underway. ...
