Mare Island environmental cleanup earns federal award By Jessica A. York Vallejo Times-Herald November 2, 2012Recent years' environmental cleanup efforts focused on the former Mare Island Naval Shipyard have garnered federal accolades, recognized in a small ceremony on the island Thursday morning. The Department of Navy Base Realignment Closure (BRAC) Program Management Office, which oversees the closure of former military bases like Mare Island's, earned one of the Department of Defense's 2012 Secretary of Environmental Awards. The Mare Island's project entry focused on its environmental restoration. The awarding panel commended contractor Weston Solutions' cleanup effort to cap a southern island landfill area, once littered with munitions. Those endeavors resulted in the creation of 8.7 acres of new wetlands, improvement of existing wetlands and creation of new public access trails. During the process, steps were taken to protect the state and federally listed endangered salt marsh harvest mouse, use local Mare Island dirt for fill and cap design innovation to drain surface water runoff into the wetlands. ...
