Settlement announced in Schilling contamination case

The Salina Public Entities announced Thursday that their boards will be considering a consent decree with the United States of America settling claims associated with the cleanup of environmental contamination at the former Schilling Air Force Base.
The estimated cost of remedial investigation, feasibility study and corrective action decision is $9,363,000, according to a news release. That does not include cleanup.

According to the terms of the consent decree, the U.S. government will pay 90 percent of the costs, or $8,426,700, and the Salina entities will pay 10 percent, or $936,300.

The terms and conditions of the decree were negotiated as a result of mediation ordered by U.S. District Court. The settlement provides for the first steps toward a comprehensive environmental cleanup of the former Schilling Air Force Base property. The initial tasks to be completed are a remedial investigation, a feasibility study and issuance of a corrective action decision by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, according to a news release.
