Navy Delays Start Of Soil Removal By Truck At NOLF

The Navy has delayed a March 11 start date to truck contaminated soil  
from a Naval Outlying Landing Field (NOLF) Imperial Beach cleanup  
action after the contractor found an additional contaminant at the  
work site.

The trucking of 4,080 cubic yards of contaminated soil is tied to a  
time critical removal action (TCRA) the Navy is conducting under the  
Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act  
(CERCLA) process. Originally, the TCRA was designed to remove soil  
containing diesel, jet propellant (JP) 5, gasoline, transformer  
fluids containing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), sand blast grit  
which contains metals, and poly aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from  
clay pigeons at a former fire fighting area, rubble disposal area,  
and skeet range.  These areas were used by the Navy from the 1940s to  
the late 1980s.

The new contaminant is an undetermined type and amount of low-level  
radioactive materials found at the fire fighting area....
