Freetown soil board issues quarry blasting permit after favorable water contamination report By Jeffrey D. Wagner Taunton Gazette (MA) May 1, 2013 FREETOWN - The Soil Conservation Board on Monday issued a blasting permit to Cape Cod Aggregates’ quarry operation on Bryant Street. The permit will expire in December. This came after a study in which the state Department of Environmental Protection tested 23 nearby wells for perchlorate counts, according to a presentation from state DEP representative Gerard Martin. A high perchlorate count can impact thyroid health and is a health risk to children under 12 and pregnant women. Martin said the DEP tested the groundwater and water flow.
