Schilling cleanup moves a step closer

Actual cleanup at the former Schilling Air Force Base is still years away, but that goal is getting closer.

A federal judge has approved a consent decree -- a joint settlement agreement between Salina Public Entities and the United States of America -- that continues the process of ridding the former base and areas around it of contamination.

The contamination won't be gone anytime soon, said Tim Rogers, Salina Airport Authority executive director. But the decree approval is another milestone in the community's 18-year conflict with the federal government.
