Environmentalists question Air Force plan to spend $4.6 million to
clean up old Scott Air Force Base landfill
By MIKE FITZGERALD Belleville News-Democrat (IL) June 5, 2013MASCOUTAH - After spending more than $20 million capping Scott Air Force Base's defunct landfill, the U.S. Air Force plans to spend another $4.6 million monitoring the site for chemical contaminants over the next 30 years. But the monitoring plan -- which was unveiled during a public hearing Wednesday night at the MidAmerica St. Louis Airport passenger terminal -- received a lackluster response from representatives of environmental groups present. A representative of the Air Force contractor overseeing the cleanup presented four alternative plans. The first plan called for taking no action at all, while the second -- the preferred option -- called for spending $4.6 million on the monitoring of contaminants such as iron and arsenic that could move into nearby Mosquito and Silver creeks. ...
