Corps, home builder battle over cleanup of former Atlas missile site By ALGIS J. LAUKAITIS Lincoln Journal Star (NE) June 17, 2013 FIRTH -- Home builder Dan Kadavy lives with fallout from the Cold War.Groundwater beneath land he bought surrounding an old Atlas missile site near Firth is contaminated with trichloroethylene, or TCE, which was used to clean missile fuel lines but causes health problems. Kadavy, 56, said the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers earlier gave the go- ahead to build houses there, so for $20,000 in 1994, he bought 16 acres to develop. He did not buy the underground silo sitting on four acres. But the corps returned in 2005 with news Kadavy's water was contaminated with 67 parts per billion of TCE, or roughly 13 times what federal safety standards allow. Responsibility for the cleanup rests with the corps, but it and Kadavy propose different solutions with vastly different time frames. ...
