Federal Plan To Sell Plum Island Moves Ahead

The Obama Administration's plan to sell Plum Island, located off Long  
Island's northern shore, took an important step forward this week.

Conservationists want a significant portion of the island to remain  
undeveloped.The General Services Administration issued a 512-page  
environmental impact report, in which the agency asserts the sale of  
the island and its animal research facility would have no major  
environmental impact.

The report outlined three possible options for the island's use -- a  
new research facility, low- to high-density housing or a nature  
preserve -- and concluded that none of these would have a significant  
adverse environmental impact.
