Air Force to consider oil, gas extraction off VAFB coast

The U.S. Air Force is set to explore the economic, environmental and  
political feasibility of leasing land for companies to extract  
offshore oil and gas off the coast of Vandenberg Air Force Base.

The Air Force Space Command, according to a release from the branch,  
will work with the Air Force Civil Engineer Center, which will  
perform an Opportunity Assessment over the next several months to  
help the Air Force determine if extended reach drilling technology  
can be used to extract offshore oil and gas from Vandenberg AFB and  
if it will be compatible with the base’s mission.

Vandenberg AFB, which has accommodated oil drilling for many years,  
currently has five active wells on the installation.
