Kirtland to test pumping of contaminated water By John Fleck Albuquerque Journal (NM) September 26, 2013An Air Force contractor Friday will begin pumping contaminated groundwater from beneath Kirtland Air Force Base and an adjacent Albuquerque neighborhood. The initial pumping is small, an early test of a system that might later be employed for larger-scale cleanup. Observers said the milestone is important. It is the first time since the 1999 discovery of a massive Kirtland Air Force Base aviation fuel spill that contaminated groundwater will pumped up for treatment. The Air Force and its state regulators have been criticized for not moving more quickly.
