Webinar: NRDC-Department of Defense Renewable Energy Siting Primer

1:00 pm EST Tuesday, November 19, 2013

New siting considerations jointly developed by the Department of Defense and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) for the first time address core issues for developing renewable energy sources on and around military installations. The considerations are designed to help developers determine low conflict places for solar, wind and other renewable energy, and are released as the DoD plans to get 25 percent of its installation energy from renewables by 2025. Developing more renewable energy sources on federal lands also is a key part of President Obama’s climate change initiative. The new considerations are designed to help developers better screen project sites and avoid potential conflicts with military operations and the protection of sensitive environmental areas. The Renewable Energy Siting Primer is now available from the DoD renewable energy siting Clearinghouse library at:http://www.acq.osd.mil/dodsc/library/Siting_Renewable_Energy_Primer_5SEP13_FINAL_WEB.pdf.

The new renewables siting considerations were developed in concert with the Renewable Energy and Defense (READ) Database, a GIS tool NRDC created that combines geospatial data on DoD installations, military flight training routes, radar and other information, along with data on environmentally sensitive areas, national monuments and other protected lands. An update to the READ Database accompanying release of the Renewable Energy Siting Primer will be presented at the webinar.

Speakers at the webinar include:

* Frank DiGiovanni, Director, Force Readiness and Training at the Defense Department and Kit Kennedy, Clean Energy Counsel at NRDC, who will present the Primer, the product of more than three years of collaboration and consultation.

* Michael Aimone, Executive Director of the Defense Department's renewable energy Siting Clearinghouse, who will provide an update on the Clearinghouse's activities.

* Matthew McKinzie, Senior Scientist at NRDC, who will provide an update and demonstration of the Renewable Energy and Defense (READ) Database.

Please contact the event coordinator Lenny Siegel at LSiegel@cpeo.org to RSVP. We want to make sure we have enough connections for all those who wish to participate. Login information for the webinar will be provided for those who RSVP prior to the event.
