Demolition of Fort Monmouth's Howard Commons delayed Eatontown mayor hopes to speed up process by Larry Higgs Asbury Park Press (NJ) November 30, 2013EATONTOWN - Borough residents may have to look at the dilapidated yellow-and-brown homes behind cyclone fencing on Pine Brook Road for at least another year or two. The former Fort Monmouth military housing at Howard Commons won’t torn down anytime soon, despite a desire for its demolition by borough officials and residents. The 475 units on 64 acres at Howard Commons have been vacant since the 1990s, when it was last used as military housing at Fort Monmouth. Now, the homes are an eyesore for people who use Pine Brook Road and residents of two apartment complexes across the street. "It’s a blighted area. Kids have to walk down that canyon of blight that exists over there," said Eatontown Mayor Gerald Tarantolo. "I'm all for rapidly demolishing them." ...
