Army closer to pulling out of Badger

The U.S. Army is proposing to discontinue a groundwater pumping and treatment system that has operated since 1991 at the former site of the Badger Army Ammunition Plant after tests showed a reduction in contamination levels in the area’s ground water.

Within the next six months to a year, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is expected to approve a plan for that area’s public use known as the Sauk Prairie Recreational Area that would include, among other activities, hiking trails, natural prairie restoration and picnic areas.

Representatives of the Army and DNR gave a presentation to a group of about 70 people Dec. 11 at the River Arts Center gallery to explain the proposal that would discontinue and dismantle the clean-up system.
