|Subject:||[CPEO-MEF] RADIATION: Crack in Savannah River Site (SC) waste tank|
New crack found in SRS waste tank By Derrek Asberry Aiken Standard January 11, 2014A new crack in one of the liquid waste tanks at the Savannah River Site has been discovered, but no waste has been released into the environment, according to Savannah River Remediation officials.
While representatives said it poses no immediate threat, the tank still contains what is heralded as some of the most dangerous nuclear waste in the state.
According to Rick Kelley with Savannah River Remediation public affairs, the tank in question is Tank 4. The crack is a hairline fracture, and it was discovered during annual inspections in September.
He said the crack is in the upper wall of the tank and is located above the nuclear waste level in the tank.
