Camp Shelby adds to buffer zone by Jesse Bass Hattiesburg American (MS) December 30, 2013 The Mississippi Army National Guard has purchased 1,522 acres near the southwest corner of Camp Shelby’s perimeter as part of the Army Compatible Use Buffer Program to limit the encroachment of training activities on nearby residential and commercial sites. “It allows us to continue the training we do here in concert with our neighbors,” said Camp Shelby Commander Col. Brad Smith. “ ... We sometimes make lots of noise.” Weyerhauser sold the land, which will be partially enrolled in the State of California’s carbon market offset program. Retired Lt. Col.
