Camp Shelby adds to buffer zone

The Mississippi Army National Guard has purchased 1,522 acres near the southwest corner of Camp Shelby’s perimeter as part of the Army Compatible Use Buffer Program to limit the encroachment of training activities on nearby residential and commercial sites.

“It allows us to continue the training we do here in concert with our neighbors,” said Camp Shelby Commander Col. Brad Smith. “ ... We sometimes make lots of noise.”

Weyerhauser sold the land, which will be partially enrolled in the State of California’s carbon market offset program.

Retired Lt. Col. Joe Knott, director of military partnerships for the Compatible Lands Foundation, said selling the carbon sequestration credits can earn more than $10 million over the next 99 years, which is planned for furthering the buffer program.
