First went Fontana’s Kaiser Steel in 1984, then the repair functions at the Santa Fe Depot, then - capping a decade of decline - the Air Force base that had supported 12,600 jobs the year before its final closure was announced, said Inland Empire economist John Husing. … Of those three, Norton cost the city the most jobs and looms largest in locals’ memories. The U.S. Air Force's socioeconomic impact analysis after the base was slated for closure in 1988 reported that in 1987 its direct and secondary employment was 12,600, slipping to 10,400 in 1990. The projection for 1994 was that 70 employees would remain. … For the entire article, see http://www.sbsun.com/business/20140322/norton-air-force-base-marks-20-years-since-closure -- Lenny Siegel Executive Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight a project of the Pacific Studies Center 278-A Hope Street Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650-961-8918 or 650-969-1545 Fax: 650-961-8918 LSiegel@cpeo.org http://www.cpeo.org _______________________________________________ Military mailing list Military@lists.cpeo.org http://lists.cpeo.org/listinfo.cgi/military-cpeo.org | |
