Soil contamination could be removed from Scotia Navy Depot

President Barack Obama included $15.8 million in the proposed federal budget to clean up decades-old contamination at the former Scotia Navy Depot in Glenville, NY, now a corporate business park that is one of the largest in the Albany region.

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer and Congressman Paul Tonko announced the funding, and said they would work with other members of the Senate and House to try to ensure the money is included in the final 2014-15 budget.

"Cleaning up the Scotia Navy Depot in Glenville would be a huge boost to the community, to the environment, and the local economy, and I will fight to realize this budget request in the Senate appropriations process," Schumer said in a prepared statement.

Schumer said the soil contamination, left behind from the era when the Naval Depot stored supplies for naval forces along the Atlantic coast and Europe, threatens the Great Flats Aquifer, the primary source of drinking water in Schenectady County.
