City wants Air Force to cover costs of well cleanup Loss of Pease water source won't hurt capacity By Jeff McMenemy Seacoast Online June 1, 2014PORTSMOUTH - City officials are prepared to turn to the U.S. Air Force to pay for any cleanup or legal costs needed to deal with the contamination of the Haven Well at Pease International Tradeport.
The tradeport previously operated as a U.S. Air Force Base from 1956 to 1991 and is a Superfund cleanup site. The Air Force has been and continues to remediate any environmental issues at the tradeport, and the cleanup is being overseen by the state Department of Environmental Services and the federal Environmental Protection Agency.
City Manager John Bohenko said in an interview after a meeting about the contamination held at the tradeport Wednesday that city officials will ask the Air Force to "make us whole," for any cleanup or legal costs associated with the contamination.
