News Release U.S. EPA Region 10 July 2, 2014 Fort Wainwright Reduces Water Contamination Risk from Fuel Tanks in EPA Settlement Seattle -The U.S. Army is taking steps to improve management of its fuel storage tanks and comply with federal laws designed to protect groundwater at Fort Wainwright Garrison, located near Fairbanks, Alaska, according to a settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. EPA inspections found that from at least 2012 to 2013, Fort Wainwright failed to perform leak detection tests, monitor underground storage tanks regularly and investigate suspected releases as required under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. “Underground tanks hold hundreds or even thousands of gallons of fuel and other liquids that can leak into groundwater if not properly maintained,” said Peter Contreras, manager of the Groundwater Unit at the EPA Seattle office. “Communities in Fairbanks, including those living at Fort Wainwright, depend on groundwater for drinking water. Fuel tanks have to be in compliance and in good working order to protect water resources.” … For the entire release, see http://yosemite.epa.gov/opa/admpress.nsf/d96f984dfb3ff7718525735900400c29/e777db2d8820eecc85257d090071ef30!OpenDocument -- Lenny Siegel Executive Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight a project of the Pacific Studies Center 278-A Hope Street Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650-961-8918 or 650-969-1545 Fax: 650-961-8918 LSiegel@cpeo.org http://www.cpeo.org _______________________________________________ Military mailing list Military@lists.cpeo.org http://lists.cpeo.org/listinfo.cgi/military-cpeo.org | |
