SouthField bill passes state Senate

The state Senate enacted Starwood Land Ventures’ proposed legislation to facilitate the development of SouthField at the former South Weymouth Naval Air Station during an informal session Monday.

The House version passed during an informal session last week, and Senate approval means the bill is headed to Gov. Deval Patrick's desk. Since the bill did not pass before the July 31 end of the legislative session, approval in both the House and Senate had to be unanimous.

"A lot of time, effort, and resources were dedicated to getting this legislation enacted today," stated Republican state Sen. Robert Hedlund of Weymouth. "I give a lot of credit to the Weymouth Town Council, Mayor Susan Kay, and the towns of Abington and Rockland for their hard work in minimizing the risk to the communities and that economic opportunity will be realized."
