Report upbeat on Schilling mess
Contamination might not be as bad as originally feared

Contamination is still in the soil and water under the former  
Schilling Air Force Base, but preliminary data suggests it's not as  
bad in some areas as originally feared.

Experts with Dragun Corp., the company hired to map a plan for  
cleaning up the mess left by military operations at the former base,  
which closed in 1965, on Friday updated representatives of the Salina  
Public Entities -- city of Salina, Salina Airport Authority, Kansas  
State University and Salina School District -- and others from the  
community.

The entities learned over the past 20 years that plumes of pollution,  
primarily the solvent TCE, or trichloroethylene, are in the soil and  
groundwater that is moving toward city water wells. TCE was used as a  
degreaser to wash aircraft and weapons at the base.
