Navy's contamination cleanup at Honolulu high school track site adds $8 million to cost

HONOLULU - The Navy will spend $8 million to clean up a former salvage yard that's the site of a high school's new all-weather track.

The replacement for Radford High School's cinder track was supposed to cost $2.3 million but will increase to $10.3 million to remove contaminants and munitions in the soil of the athletic field, The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported (http://bit.ly/1pIHjjg ).

Salvage yard rubble and debris was found in December during initial excavation for the synthetic track. Workers recently found a small projectile fuse, empty ammunition casings and part of a 5-inch projectile cartridge.
